needs. |

treated in an environment which helps them to sort out problems,
discover solutions, develop new coping skills and be restored
to healthier lives.
Our program
is family-focused. We pay attention to the issues faced by family
members when a loved one is hospitalized with a mental illness.
We recognize
the referral source as part of the treatment team. Working together,
we are able to improve the patient's mental health, personal growth,
and prospects for a more productive and balanced lifestyle.
Treatment
Approach
Candidates
for the New Choices Program include individuals with moderate
to severe depression, bipolar disorder, major thought disorders,
affective disorders, and other dysfunctions.
Shortly
after admission, patients receive extensive psychiatric, psychological
and medical tests. These tests help us evaluate the patient's
needs and tailor an individualized treatment schedule to accomplish
goals mutually set by the patient and the team.
Our treatment
methods encourage self-exploration, self-expression, responsibility,
rational thinking, insight, creativity, and interaction with peers
and family.
Our goal
is to assist patients in understanding their problems and developing
more effective coping skills.
Treatment
Team
Each patient
receives the attention of a team of professionals:
- Psychiatrists
- Psychologists
- Clinical social workers
- Psychiatric nurses
- Family therapists
- Activity/recreational therapists
|
In addition,

and other specialties are available when needed, as well as allied
health professionals in specialties such as occupational therapy
and dietary.
Treatment
Schedules
We encourage
each patient to achieve his/her goals by participating in selected
treatment activities. The activities may include:
- Medical psychiatric assessment
- Individual psychotherapy
- Family therapy
- Group therapy
- Multifamily group therapy
- Activity and recreational therapy

Psychoeducational
forums addressing topics such as stress and anger management, effective
communication, goal setting, creative problem solving, understanding
your illness, and the grief process.
Family
Involvement
Dealing with a mental illness is stressful for all family members.
Often it is accompanied by feelings of anger, guilt, and hurt, which
strain family and marital relationships. The New Choices staff supports
and involves family members in the treatment process rather than
isolating them. At a weekly family group resource night, our staff
presents information on a mental health topic and gives families
an opportunity to share concerns and ask questions. We help families
manage stress and better understand their loved one's mental illness.
Hospital-Based
Because the program is hospital-based, it has several advantages
over non-hospital-based psychiatric settings: medical diagnostic
tests are easier to obtain, a wide range of medical professionals
are readily available for consultation, and patient confidentiality
is easier to maintain.
Discharge
Planning
Treatment goals do not end when the patient is dismissed from the
hospital. Instead, we develop plans that meet the patient's continuing
needs and reinforce gains achieved in the hospital. This discharge
planning begins upon the individual's admission to the program.
When dismissal nears, we assist patients with re-entry into their
family, work place, and community.
Insurance
The New Choices Program is recognized by most insurance companies.
The treatment program has been approved by Medicaid and Medicare.
Please check with your insurance company to clarify coverge. We
will also make every effort to work with you regarding a payment
plan.
